Dr Gilles Julien, C.M., O.Q. Social pediatrician, Clinical Director, founder and President
Dr. Gilles Julien’s mission is to allow children from disadvantaged environments to blossom and develop their potential. A visionary leader, he has created a preventive approach, community social pediatrics, that guarantees that each of a child’s fundamental rights, as set forth in the Convention on the Rights of the Child is respected. A Laval University Medicine graduate and a holder of a University of Montréal degree in Pediatrics, Dr. Gilles Julien accumulated years of research and experience before developing his unique method. He held many high-level Community and Public Health positions in Québec and elsewhere around the world with the support of organization such as the World Bank and the United Nations. Profiting from his wealth of experience, he came back to Montréal to put his innovative approach into action in the city’s underprivileged neighborhoods. In 1997, he founded the first community social pediatrics centre in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve. He then established in 2003 a second center in the Côte-des-Neiges area.
These centres help hundreds of children every year. They are affiliated with McGill University and University of Montréal and provide a much sought-after training program for doctors and other professionals in the fields of health, social services and Law.Thanks to the support of the Fondation du Dr Julien, a charity organization set up in 2005, a network of community social pediatrics centers was also developed across the country. Dr Julien has received numerous honours over the course of his career. He is the recipient of the Gold Medal of the Lieutenant-Governor of Québec, as well as a member of the Order of Québec and of the Order of Canada, in addition to being named an Ashoka Fellow.
